 Julia (1977)

At the behest of an old and dear friend, playwright Lillian Hellman undertakes a dangerous mission to smuggle funds into Nazi Germany. (IMDB)

The 1977 film Julia was based on the "Julia" chapter of Lillian Hellman's book Pentimento. Lillian Hellman claimed the story was based on true events that occurred early in her life, but it later came to be believed that it was largely fiction. Author Mary McCarthy, said of Hellman that "every word she writes is a lie, including 'and' and 'the'. That resulted in a libel suit. Many people believe that Hellmann's story is really based on Muriel Gardiner.
