Hysteria grips California in the wake of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. An assorted group of defenders attempt to make the coast defensible against an imagined Japanese invasion, in this big budget, big cast comedy. Members of a Japanese submarine crew scout out the madness, along with a Captain in Germany's Kreigsmarine (Navy). (Keith Loh  IMDB)

Co-writer Gale stated the plot is loosely based on what has come to be known as the Great Los Angeles Air Raid of 1942 as well as the bombardment of the Ellwood oil refinery, near Santa Barbara, by a Japanese submarine. Many other events in the film were based on real incidents, including the Zoot Suit Riots and an incident in which the U.S. Army placed an anti-aircraft gun in a homeowner's yard on the Maine coast. Jeff (Michael Brandon) is the manager for a very popular radio station in Los Angeles. He has an arsenal of great disc jockeys: Mother (Eileen Brennan), Swan (Martin Mull), Prince (Cleavon Little) and Doc (Alex Karras). In addition, the station's motto is as little advertising as possible, resulting in more songs played. But, the middle management may be out to change this. They want Jeff to honor a proposal with the US Army to run quite a few recruitment spots. Also, the station endures personal problems in breakups, breakdowns, agent loss, and rival attacks. For his part, Jeff pulls off quite a feat by airing a Linda Ronstadt concert live which was sponsored by a different radio station! (IMDB  Amy Adler)
