This low budget first film from director Jean Rollin is in reality two very

loosely-connected, surreally erotic shorts about vampirism. In the first,

three Parisians including a psychoanalyst try to convince four neurotic

sisters living in a decaying country chateau that their belief that they

are 200 year old vampires is false. The alluring young women are influenced

and controlled by a enigmatic disembodied voice which turns out to be the

an aging, aristocratic lord of the manor, whose motives are unclear but

clearly perverse. Local rustics unite to hunt down and kill the sanguine

siblings. In the second, the Queen of the Vampires and her acolytes arrive

on the scene, resurrect the dead, and promulgate the cause of the Undead

while a medical researcher works to find an antidote to vampirism.

On the films original release, it received negative reviews but because of

the events of May 1968 in Paris*, French distributors, fearing for the box

office, decided to freeze their activities until it went back to normal. As

a result, no other new feature was released during that period apart from

this one. Consequently, by lack of competitors, it became the most successful

film of the year in France.

*The May 1968 protests in France involved the first wildcat general strike

ever, and the largest general strike to date which brought the economy of an

advanced industrial country to a virtual standstill.

Based on the real-life gang rape of Cheryl Araujo

that occurred at Big Dan's Bar in New Bedford,

Massachusetts, on March 6, 1983, this film was one

of the first Hollywood films to deal with rape in

a direct manner.

A quartet of international crooks -- Peterson, O'Hara, Ross and Ravello -- is stranded in Italy while their steamer is being repaired. With them are the Dannreuthers. Fantom Kiler 2 (1999)

For Fantom Kiler 2, which delves into the origins of its eponymous maniac, director Roman Nowicki (AKA Trevor Barley) once again assembles the cream of Poland's stripping industry for more wanton sleaze and deviancy, only this time around proceedings prove far less interesting thanks to a distinct lack of humour and Nowicki's irritating tendency to linger far too long on each and every scene (even the most lurid of acts are reduced to utter tedium, and when a hot, nekkid woman with live jump leads clamped to her tits starts to get boring, then there's something seriously wrong!). Against popular opinion - I really dug the first FANTOM KILER joint. I thought that it was stylish, sexy, sleazy, misogynistic, and funny - and that's a hard combo to pull together successfully - but I feel that it pulled it off pretty damn well. FK2 is decent, but lacks a good bit of the "charm" of the first film. The "style" is still there, but this entry tries to take itself a little too seriously while still delivering the sleaze - and it doesn't work as well... (EVOL666 IMDB)
